He's committed to finding the killer, even if it means working alongside his old flame, US Forest Service Special Agent Terra Connors.

When Terra discovers that the murder victim had ties to a powerful and dangerous trafficker of archaeological artifacts, the investigation takes a deadly turn--one that hits too close to home. As Terra fears she lacks the courage to face what comes next, Jack is more determined than ever to protect her. But he's failed her before. And if he fails this time, it will cost them far more than just their hearts.

My Review

Present Danger, by Elizabeth Goddard, is the first book in the Rocky Mountain Courage series. Page after page, vivid storytelling is enhanced by a satisfying blend of mystery, suspense, action, faith, and romance. Not only is this novel rich in setting, characterization, and plot, but the themes of truth, restoration, faith, purpose, and second chances add meaning to a gripping story that is truly entertaining.

In Present Danger, forested mountains dominate the setting adding elements of natural beauty and inherent danger to the story. The setting is descriptively immersive and provides a multi-sensory experience within the novel. The slopes are steep and treacherous, the trails are long and isolated, and the trees are thick and concealing. As the story unfolds, the setting itself contributes its own sense of peril and secrecy.

In addition to the setting, the compelling characters also make this book appealing. They are perceptive, vulnerable, and sincere. With authentic motivations and relatable insecurities, they are genuinely interesting. As they endeavor to piece together a growing number of clues that arise from difficult and dangerous events, they also search for purpose and meaning within their errors and decisions. As they draw closer to the solutions they seek, forgiveness, healing, and hope are given space to grow.

With excellent pacing, the well-developed plot of this novel thoughtfully and creatively reveals relevant details. As important facts are carefully uncovered, so is the truth behind the destructive and troubling events the characters experience. Their attempts to discover the significance of uncertain events fosters a captivating reading experience.

Ms. Goddard has succeeded in writing a novel that is very engaging and intriguing. With its indispensable setting, insightful characters, and riveting plot, Present Danger is certainly a special book. I wholeheartedly recommend it to all readers who enjoy clean, suspenseful, romantic fiction.
