Contemporary Fiction Book Review: Charming the Troublemaker

Publisher's Description

"When Dr. Alex Murdock is demoted to a university in rural Virginia, the last thing he expects to find is a future. But country charm never looked as good as it did on Rainey Mitchell.

Rainey Mitchell does not need a high-class flirt in her wounded world, but trouble and temptation wafts off the new professor as strong as his sandalwood-scented cologne.

When circumstances thrust them together to save her tutoring clinic, can the troublemaker find the hero inside and encourage the reticent Rainey to open her heart again?"

My Review

Charming the Troublemaker, the second book in the “Mitchell’s Crossroads” series by Pepper Basham, is a delightfully enjoyable novel. Like its Appalachian Mountain setting, this novel abounds with a natural, creative beauty. Ms. Basham has a definitive talent for finding the multifaceted nature of life’s most ordinary moments. She is skilled at showing how humor, sincerity, and bittersweet can co-mingle in unexpected ways. At all times, this novel finds the perfect blend of comedy, romance, faith, and even a bit of suspense, making the story thoroughly readable and engaging. The characters are wonderfully well-developed and endearing. The plot is skillfully paced and truly entertaining. The enduring themes of trust and second chances are sincerely heart-felt and deeply inspiring. There is so much to love about this novel, and so I recommend it whole-heartedly.

My Reflection

In this novel, the transforming power of the love of God was evident in the lives of the characters. When the characters encounter the unconditional love of God, they cannot help but be altered heart and soul. The grace, forgiveness, and peace that grow from their choice to plant their faith in God profoundly affects the characters and how they respond to life’s challenges. Whether in fiction or in real life, it is always inspiring to be reminded of the influential power of God’s love.
