Publisher's Book Description

“At the height of World War I, two sweethearts face impossible odds in this powerful tale of courage, duty, and heartbreak.

In the summer of 1918, Captain Marcus Weatherford arrives in Russia on a secret mission, with a beautiful ballerina posing as his fiancée. He's there to find the Romanov tsarina and her son and glean information about a plot to assassinate Lenin. As the danger intensifies, Marcus's sense of duty battles with his desire to return home to Clare, the woman he truly loves, before it's too late.

Military hospital orderly Clare Danner still suffers from Marcus's betrayal after learning he's engaged to another woman. Clare also fears losing her daughter, Daisy, to the heartless family who took her away once before. Only Marcus can provide the critical proof needed to save Daisy, but when an injury leaves him powerless to help, Clare's fate--and the fate of the top-secret mission--hangs in the balance.”

My Review

In Love’s Time, by Kate Breslin, is truly an engrossing work of historical fiction! With beautiful writing page after page, this captivating novel is quite remarkable. Set during the perilous years of WWI, this book is filled with intrigue, history, romance, and surprises. An integral setting and compelling characters bolster a story that is very moving and memorable.

Ms. Breslin’s writing style is detailed, expressive, and peppered with thoughtful descriptions of the manners, customs, and culture of early twentieth century England during the Great War. This attention to detail makes this novel especially immersive and engaging. The characters in this novel are also notable. As they develop and respond to the situations around them, they grow in their authenticity and relatability. I found myself eagerly turning the pages to learn more about them and their fears, their motivations, and their relationships. The gentle romance in this novel is also touching as scenes involving simple games of chess or caring for plants in a conservatory take on a sweet significance all their own.

Furthermore, in this book, Ms. Breslin successfully explores meaningful thematic combinations of guilt and forgiveness, lies and truth, heartache and hope, and loss and restoration. With an emphasis on the importance of friends and family, this novel also overflows with affirming examples of humble endurance, perseverance, and redemption!

With dangerous secrets, mysterious motives, and injured war veterans playing prominent roles in the plot, Ms. Breslin has crafted a story that is vibrant and engrossing. From beginning to end, In Love’s Time offers a thoroughly satisfying blend of history, romance, faith, and mystery. It is an entertaining, inspirational novel that I gladly recommend.
